to the town's street and roads commission to look
further into speed cameras as a way to curb speeding
along Main Street and Rising Ridge Road.
Council President Peter Helt, who is also the liaison
to the commission, asked the council for direction on
the matter during its Monday night meeting.

Final county land-use public hearing before
commissioners debate draws largest turnout [Frederick News Post
2/1/12]
Frederick County saved the biggest group for last
Tuesday night, with more than 40 lawyers and residents
speaking at a public hearing about the county's
proposed comprehensive plan and zoning review.
The public hearing regarding the New Market region was
the last scheduled meeting before the Board of County
Commissioners begins its review of individual requests
for planning and zoning changes. Written comments will
continue to be accepted throughout the process.
There are 42 applications up for consideration in the
region that includes Mount Airy, New Market and Lake
Linganore. If approved, it could lead to the
construction of hundreds of homes on 3,600 acres.
"We are concerned with any properties within a mile of
our borders," Mount Airy Mayor Patrick Rockinberg
said. "Rezoning these properties would be inconsistent
with the will of the people."
Building on properties near the town would lead to
housing growth that negatively affects roads, schools
and the general standard of living, he said.
"(Our residents) came to escape growth," Rockinberg
said. "The citizens did not move to Mount Airy for
more growth, they moved away from it."
Every member in a
household, over the age of 9, can fill out their own
survey.
You may also take the
survey if you or a family member attends Mount Airy
Schools, or you own a business in Mount Airy.
Paper copies of the
survey are available at Mt. Airy Town Hall
Mt. Airy Police Task Force close to recommendation
[Carroll County Times - 1/28/12]
The Mount Airy Police Task Force has identified five
options for the future of town police protection and
will soon hold workshops for the community to explain
the options and answer questions.
The three-member task force was created by Mayor
Patrick Rockinberg to look at other options for town
police protection in light of increasing costs
associated with the Maryland State Police's resident
trooper program, which currently polices the town.
The town has budgeted $694,000 for Fiscal Year 2012
for the program, which designates 4.5 trooper
positions in the town. The cost of the program is
expected to increase over each of the next few years,
Rockinberg said, so he wants to see if there are any
better options for the town.
Since September, Robert Disinger, a former Montgomery
County police corporal; Greg Scott, a former Howard
County police lieutenant; and Rick Blatchford, who has
a finance background, have been collecting data and
meeting with state, county and town police leaders...
Be Local...What's it all about? [Four
County Little League - 1/26/12]
Recently I was contacted by one of the league parents
and was asked to mention the BeLocal survey. At the
time I said I would offer a link to the survey in our
monthly newsletter. Well, here is the link. In the
process of setting up the link, I made an Interesting
discovery. The BeLocal website's about us page says...
BeLocal Mt. Airy is local citizens group in Mount
Airy, Maryland actively seeking to strengthen our
town’s sense of community, sense of place, and local
self-reliance. Our motto is “Grow. Play. Shop. Act.”
which encompass both the local-first thinking and the
wide-range of initiatives which emerge from a grass
roots approach to listening to the residents of Mount
Airy, MD.
As I read their website, I began to realize that
BeLocal and Four County Little League have some of the
same goals and dreams...
Mount Airy considering Goodwill site plan
[Carroll County Times - 1/25/12]
Martha Scalley said they've loved their neighborhood
since moving there, but are now worried that a
Goodwill store, which is proposed to go on North Main
Street near Candice Drive, could force them to move
again.
"If the Goodwill store does end up going there, this
would be a totally different neighborhood," Scalley
said. "We would definitely think about moving."
Scalley said the Goodwill store, which hasn't yet
gotten approval from the town or its planning and
zoning commission, would bring traffic and crowds from
the constant coming and going of people dropping items
off and shopping.
The town planning and zoning commission will discuss
the proposed store during its monthly meeting at 7
p.m. Monday and will review a staff report that sets
forth major changes to be made to the plan...

Mount Airy mayor, councilman debate over moved
memorial
[Carroll County Times - 1/9/12]
The Mount Airy Mayor and Town Council decertified a
small park area previously used to honor two residents
who died in the 9/11 attacks after a heated discussion
over an Eagle Scout project that moved the memorial in
September. The matter was brought up during the
council's Monday night meeting to decide who would be
responsible for cleaning up the old memorial area.
During the discussion, Councilman David Blais accused
Mayor Patrick Rockinberg of overstepping his powers
and approving a project that should have been approved
by the town's parks and recreation commission.
Rockinberg contended the matter was too important to
ignore and said that Blais should have contacted him
if he had a problem with it.
In 2002, a memorial stone was placed along Main Street
near the Train Depot to honor Navy Commander Ronald
Vauk and Army Chief Warrant Officer William Ruth, both
residents who died in the attack on the Pentagon...
iPhone Flashlight Helps Lost Mount Airy Hiker Get
Rescued [MyFoxDC 1/2/12]
Christopher Tkacik and his buddy Boo are back home in
Mount Airy, Md., safe and sound, with quite a story to
tell about the New Year's Eve they spent lost in the
woods. "If I was alone, I would have been worried from
the beginning," Tkacik said. "But you have your best
friend with you."
They were hiking in Gambrill State Park northwest of
Frederick. When they crossed the same creek for the
fourth time, Tkacik says he knew they were lost. He
called 911. The sheriff sent a helicopter. At home,
his wife Aysem sent Christopher a text message...
